The Secretary of State for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 56(1)(b) and 118(1), (4) and (5) of the Care Standards Act 2000[
1], and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, and having consulted the General Social Care Council[
2], hereby makes the following Order: -
Citation, interpretation and application
1.
- (1) This Order may be cited as the General Social Care Council (Registration) (Description of Social Care Workers) Order 2004 and shall come into force on 1st April 2004.
(2) In this Order -
(a) "the Act" means the Care Standards Act 2000; and
(b) "student social worker" means a person participating in a course approved by the General Social Care Council under section 63 of the Act for persons wishing to become social workers.
(3) This Order applies to England only.
Description of social care workers for the purposes of registration
2.
Pursuant to section 56(1)(b) of the Act, a person who is a student social worker is hereby specified as a social care worker.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order, which applies to England only, is made under section 56(1)(b) of the Care Standards Act 2000 ("the Act"). Under section 56 of the Act, the General Social Care Council ("the English Council") must maintain a register of social workers and of social care workers of any other description specified by Order. This Order specifies student social workers as being social care workers for the purposes of registration under that section. A student social worker is defined as someone who is participating in a course approved by the English Council under section 63 of the Act for persons wishing to become social workers.
