Purchase of provisions by unconvicted prisoners. 40.(1) Persons committed to a prison on remand or pending trial shall be maintained and provided for in like manner as prisoners sentenced to imprisonment, but, subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by prison rules, such persons may, if they so desire, purchase and provide for their own use and at their own expense foodstuffs which are already prepared for consumption. (2) Such persons shall not be allowed to purchase, provide or have any intoxicating liquor except on the orders of the medical officer of the prison.
