(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order designates the area within 100 metres of the wreck site of an unknown wooden vessel lying approximately 14 kilometres south-east of Beachy Head, East Sussex as a restricted area for the purposes of the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 ("the Act").
The Secretary of State is satisfied that the site ought to be protected from unauthorised interference on account of the historical and archaeological importance of the vessel and any objects contained or formerly contained in it which may be lying on the sea bed in or near the wreck.
Under section 1(3) of the Act, it is a criminal offence for a person to engage in certain activities in a restricted area, except under the authority of a licence issued by the Secretary of State.
A full impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sectors is foreseen.
The position of the site is defined by co-ordinates of latitude and longitude according to the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84), as revised in 2004.
