The Technology Strategy Board is established by Royal Charter for purposes connected with scientific research and technology and consists of persons appointed by a Minister of the Crown.
In accordance with section 1(4) of the Science and Technology Act 1965[
1] a draft of this Order has been laid before and approved by a resolution of each House of Parliament.
Accordingly, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Her by section 1(1)(c) of that Act, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to declare as follows:—
1.
The Technology Strategy Board, whose objects are specified in the Schedule to this Order, is established as a Research Council for the purposes of the Science and Technology Act 1965.
2.
This Order may be cited as the Technology Strategy Board Order 2007 and shall come into force on 1st April 2007.

SCHEDULE
OBJECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY STRATEGY BOARD
1.
—(1) The Board is established and incorporated for purposes connected with research into, and the development and exploitation of, science, technology and new ideas, with the aim of increasing economic growth and improving quality of life in Our United Kingdom. In fulfilling these purposes it is to have particular regard to the benefits to be gained by those engaging in business activities in Our United Kingdom.
(2) For these purposes, the Board may, in particular—
(a) promote and support research into, and the development and exploitation of, science, technology and new ideas, by those engaged in business activities;
(b) promote and support the use of, and investment in, science, technology and new ideas, by those engaged in business activities;
(c) collect and disseminate knowledge about the use of, and investment in, science, technology and new ideas;
(d) contribute to building public confidence in, and understanding of, research into, and the development and exploitation of, science, technology and new ideas; and
(e) advise Government on strategies for, and respond to questions posed by Government about, the use of, and investment in, science, technology and new ideas, by those engaged in business activities.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order declares the Technology Strategy Board to be established as a Research Council for the purposes of the Science and Technology Act 1965 and specifies the objects of the Board.
A Regulatory Impact Assessment in respect of this Order is available and a copy can be obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry, 151 Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1W 9SS. Copies of these documents have been placed in the libraries of both Houses of Parliament.
