Title and commencement

1. This Order may be cited as the Assisted Areas Order 2000 and shall come into force on 31st July 2000.

Interpretation

2.-(1) In this Order-

"the 1982 Act" means the Industrial Development Act 1982;

"the 1993 Order" means the Assisted Areas Order 1993(2); and

"the 1993 (Amendment) Order" means the Assisted Areas (Amendment) Order 1993(3).

(2) In Schedule 1 hereto-

(a)the references to the county of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and to the metropolitan counties of Merseyside and South Yorkshire shall be references to those areas as they existed on 21st April 1991; and

(b)any reference to a local authority area in Wales shall be a reference to that area as it existed on 1st April 1999.

(3) In Schedule 2 hereto-

(a)any reference to a ward shall be a reference to that ward as it existed on 21st April 1991; and

(b)any reference to a local authority area shall be a reference to that area as it existed on 21st April 1991.

Specification

3.-(1) In this Order the specification of an area as a development area is for the purposes of the 1982 Act and section 1 of the Derelict Land Act 1982(4).

(2) On and after 31st July 2000 the areas described in Schedules 1 and 2 hereto shall be development areas.

Revocation

4. The 1993 Order and the 1993 (Amendment) Order are hereby revoked.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order provides that from 31st July 2000 the areas described in Schedule 1 as Tier 1 areas and the areas described in Schedule 2 as Tier 2 areas will be development areas for the purposes of the Industrial Development Act 1982 (the 1982 Act) and section 1 of the Derelict Land Act 1982. The Tier 1 areas described in Schedule 1 have been granted Assisted Areas status under Article 87(3)(a) of the Treaty establishing the European Community. The Tier 2 areas described in Schedule 2 have been granted Assisted Areas status under Article 87(3)(c) of the Treaty establishing the European Community. This Order has not specified or designated any area an intermediate area or a special development area under section 1 of the 1982 Act. Areas described in the Schedules are as they existed on the relevant dates given in article 2(2) and (3) of the Order.

Description of the areas in England in Schedule 1 is by reference to counties and metropolitan counties. All counties and metropolitan counties are defined by reference to the counties and the metropolitan counties that were used for the purposes of carrying out the census taken for Great Britain on 21st April 1991 (the 1991 Census). Information as to the boundaries of the counties and metropolitan counties used for the 1991 Census is available from the Office for National Statistics at 1 Drummond Gate, London SW1V 2QQ or the Ordnance Survey at Romsey Road, Southampton SO16 4GU.

Description of the areas in Wales in Schedule 1 is by reference to local authority areas. All local authority areas are defined by reference to the local authority areas as they existed on 1st April 1999. Information as to the boundaries of the local authority areas in Wales on that date is available from the Office for National Statistics or the Ordnance Survey at the addresses given above.

Description of the areas in Schedule 2 is by reference to wards, with the exception of the islands of Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae which form a part of the ward of Fairlie Skelmorlie Cumbrae. All wards are defined by reference to the District Electoral Wards that were used for the purposes of carrying out the 1991 Census. For ease of reference purposes all wards are listed by reference to the relevant local authority areas which were used for the purposes of carrying out the 1991 Census. Information as to the boundaries of District Electoral Wards and local authority areas used for the 1991 Census is available from the Office for National Statistics or the Ordnance Survey at the addresses given above.

This Order revokes all earlier Assisted Areas Orders (article 4).
