Whereas the council of the county of Hertfordshire have, in pursuance of section 4(2) of the Coroners Act 1988(1) and after due compliance with the provisions of the Coroners (Orders as to Districts) Rules 1927(2), submitted to the Secretary of State a draft Order providing for the alteration of the existing division of that county into coroners' districts:
Now, therefore, the Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by that section, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Hertfordshire (Coroners' Districts) (Amendment) Order 1998.
2.-(1) This Order shall come into force on 1st September 1998.
(2) This Order shall not have effect in relation to any inquest begun before the day on which it comes into force or to any post-mortem examination which, before that day, a coroner has directed or requested a medical practitioner to make.
3. The existing Hemel Hempstead coroner's district and St. Albans-Watford coroner's district shall be amalgamated to form a single coroner's district called the West Hertfordshire coroner's district.
4.-(1) The Hertfordshire (Coroners' Districts) Order 1974(3) shall accordingly be amended as follows.
(2) In article 3, for the word "five" there shall be substituted the word "three".
(3) In the Schedule, the entries relating to the Hemel Hempstead coroner's district, the St. Albans coroner's district and the Watford coroner's district shall be omitted and, at the end-“
(a)in column 1 (name of coroner's district) there shall be added "West Hertfordshire coroner's district";
(b)in column 2 (area comprised in coroner's district named in column 1), opposite that entry, there shall be added "The districts of Dacorum, Hertsmere, St. Albans, Three Rivers and Watford; in the district of Welwyn Hatfield the parishes of Northaw and North Mymms.".
(4) The Hertfordshire (Coroners' Districts) (Amendment) Order 1974(4) is hereby revoked.

The County of Hertfordshire was divided into five coroners' districts by the Hertfordshire (Coroners' Districts) Order 1974. Two of these, St. Albans and Watford, were amalgamated to form the St. Albans-Watford coroner's district by the Hertfordshire (Coroners' Districts) (Amendment) Order 1974.
This Order amalgamates the Hemel Hempstead and St. Albans-Watford coroners' districts to form a single West Hertfordshire coroner's district.
