The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 2(9) and 15(5) of the Local Government Act 1988(1), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1.-(1) This Order may be cited as the Local Government Act 1988 (Defined Activities) (Exemptions) (London Fire and Civil Defence Authority) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 22nd July 1998.
(2) In this Order, "the LFCDA" means the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority.
2.-(1) The provision of construction and property services(2) by the LFCDA shall not be treated as a defined activity so long as it is carried out during the period beginning with 1st April 1999 and ending on 31st March 2000.
(2) The provision of financial services(3) by the LFCDA shall not be treated as a defined activity so long as it is carried out during the period beginning with 22nd July 1998 and ending on 31st March 2001.

Under Part I of the Local Government Act 1988 (competition), work falling within certain defined activities may be carried out by local authorities only if particular conditions are fulfilled.
This Order exempts from the requirements of Part I the provision of construction and property services by the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority so long as it is carried out during the period beginning with 1st April 1999 and 31st March 2000, and the provision of financial services by that authority so long as it is carried out during the period beginning with 22nd July 1998 and ending on 31st March 2001.
