In exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 71(1) of the Police Act 1997(1), and after consultation with the organisations mentioned in subsection (2), the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the National Crime Squad (Secretary of State's Objectives) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 13th February 1998.
2. The objectives for the National Crime Squad are-
(a)to secure, in co-operation with the Scottish Crime Squad and other law enforcement agencies as necessary, consistent improvement in the quality of operations leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals or the disruption of criminal enterprises engaged in serious and organised transnational crime which impacts on the United Kingdom;
(b)to secure, in co-operation with the Scottish Crime Squad and other law enforcement agencies as necessary, consistent improvement in the quality of operations leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals or disruption of criminal enterprises engaged in serious and organised crime within the United Kingdom.

This Order sets out the Secretary of State's objectives for the National Crime Squad. Section 48 of the Police Act 1997 requires the National Crime Squad Service Authority to have regard to these objectives in the discharge of its functions. Section 50 of the 1997 Act requires the National Crime Squad Service Authority to issue a service plan which must give particulars of these objectives.
