REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES ETC. ABROAD

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 41(1) of the British Nationality Act 1981(1), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1.-(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Registration of Overseas Births and Deaths (Amendment) Regulations 1997 and shall come into force on 1st July 1997.
(2) In these Regulations "the principal Regulations" means the Registration of Overseas Births and Deaths Regulations 1982(2).
2.-(1) The principal Regulations shall be amended in accordance with the following provisions of this Regulation.
(2) In Regulation 5(1), after paragraph (f), there shall be added the following:
"(g)the birth of a person, born on or after 1st July 1997, who was at birth a British Overseas citizen under the provisions of paragraph 6(2) of the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986(3)."
(3) In Regulation 8, paragraph (1)(a), after the words "British citizen," there shall be inserted the words "British National (Overseas),".

These Regulations amend the Registration of Overseas Births and Deaths Regulations 1982 by extending the provisions for the registration of births to those born after 1st July 1997 who acquire British Overseas citizenship at birth by virtue of the provisions to reduce statelessness contained in the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986. They also make provision for the registration of deaths of British National (Overseas) citizens.
