(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order renews for Great Britain until 31st December 1991 the powers of section 1 of the Employment Subsidies Act 1978, which would otherwise not be exercisable after the end of June 1990, the section having been renewed until that date by the Employment Subsidies Act 1978 (Renewal) (Great Britain) Order 1988 (S.I. 1988/2229). Section 1 of the Employment Subsidies Act 1978 authorises the Secretary of State to make payments to employers enabling them to retain in employment persons who might otherwise become unemployed, to take on new employees and generally to maintain or enlarge their labour force.
