Whereas Her Majesty in pursuance of the Regency Acts 1937 to 1953, was pleased, by Letters Patent dated the 28th day of March 1988, to delegate to the six Counsellors of State therein named or any two or more of them full power and authority during the period of Her Majesty's absence from the United Kingdom to summon and hold on Her Majesty's behalf Her Privy Council and to signify thereat Her Majesty's approval for anything for which Her Majesty's approval in Council is required:
Now, therefore, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and His Royal Highness The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, being authorised thereto by the said Letters Patent, and in pursuance of the powers conferred by section 735(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894(1) and all other powers enabling Her Majesty, and by and with the advice of Her Majesty's Privy Council, do on Her Majesty's behalf order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:
1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Confirmation of Legislation) (Gibraltar) Order 1988 and shall come into force on 26th May 1988.
2. The Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Ordinance, 1988(2) is hereby confirmed.

This Order, made under section 735(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894, confirms an Ordinance enacted by the House of Assembly of Gibraltar which extends to Gibraltar the Merchant Shipping (Certification of Deck Officers) Regulation 1985 (S.I. 1985/1306), the Merchant Shipping (Certification of Marine Engineer Officers and Licensing of Marine Engine Operators) Regulations 1986 (S.I. 1986/1935), the Merchant Shipping (Certification and Watchkeeping) Regulations 1982 (S.I. 1982/1699) and the Merchant Shipping (Tankers-Officers and Ratings) Regulations 1984 (S.I. 1984/94), which also applies in relation to Gibraltar-registered tankers. The Ordinance also amends the Merchant Shipping Ordinance provision concerning the Safety of Life at Sea and extends to Gibraltar-registered ships and other ships in Gibraltar the provisions of the Merchant Shipping (Load Lines) Act 1967 (c. 27) and the load line rules and the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Oil Pollution) Regulations 1983 (S.I. 1983/1398).
