(This note is not part of the Order)
Section 11 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1988 enables Orders in Council to establish categories of registry by reference to which the registration of ships in the relevant overseas territories - ie Crown Dependencies and dependent territories - may be regulated. This Order establishes the first such category, the "unlimited tonnage and type" category, to which Bermuda and the Isle of Man are assigned under which there is no restriction as to the ships which may be registered.
It does not affect any provision in force in such territories by which the registration of ships is, or may be, restricted.
