NURSES, MIDWIVES AND HEALTH VISITORS

In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 22(4) of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979(1) I hereby approve the Rules made by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting and set out in the Schedule hereto.
This Order may be cited as the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Entry to Training Requirements) Amendment Rules Approval Order 1988 and shall come into force on 9th November 1988.

The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sections 2(3) and 22(1), (2) and (3) of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979(2), and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf having, in accordance with section 22(3) of the Act consulted the National Boards and representatives of groups likely to be affected by these Rules, hereby makes the following Rules, namely:
1.-(1) These Rules may be cited as the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Entry to Training Requirements) Amendment Rules 1988.
(2) In these Rules "the principal Rules" means the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Rules 1983(3).
2. In Rule 16 of the principal Rules(4)-
(a)after sub-paragraph (e) of paragraph (1) there shall be inserted-
"(f)such vocational qualifications as the Council may from time to time approve as providing a standard of education appropriate to entry into such training";
(b)for paragraph (3) there shall be substituted-
"(3) Where a person has complied with the requirements for enabling an application to be made for admission to Part 2, 4, 6 or 7 of the register as set out in paragraph (2) of rule 14 and has been so registered and such registration is not ineffective that person shall be eligible to apply for entry into training leading to admission to Part 1, 3, 5 or 8 of the register without complying with the requirements of paragraph (1) of this rule provided that she has practised for a minimum period of one year full-time (or practised part-time for an equivalent period) as a nurse subsequent to registration in Part 2, 4, 6 or 7 of the register".

The Rules approved by this Order, and made by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, further amend the Rules approved by the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Rules Approval Order 1983 as they relate to the minimum educational requirements for entry to professional training.
The rules approved by this Order specify a further, alternative minimum educational requirement for entry into training for Part 1, 3, 5 and 8 of the Register and amend the provisions for such entry into training in so far as they relate to persons already registered in Part 2, 4, 6 or 7 of the Register.
