1. The new highways which the Secretary of State proposes to construct-
(a)along the route described in Schedule 1 to this Order (the highway along this route being in this Order referred to as "the main new trunk road");
(b)along the route described in Schedule 2 to this Order (the highway along this route being in this Order referred to as "the Rochester Way Relief Road Interchange");
(c)along the routes described in Schedule 3 to this Order (the highways along these routes being in this Order referred to as "the Rochester Way Relief Road slip roads");
(d)along the routes described in Schedule 4 to this Order (the highways along these routes being in this Order referred to as "the Shooters Hill slip roads");
(e)along the routes described in Schedule 5 to this Order (the highways along these routes being in this Order referred to as "the Thamesmead slip roads"),
shall become trunk roads as from the date when this Order comes into force.
2. The centre lines of the new trunk roads are indicated by heavy black lines on the deposited plan.
3. The Secretary of State directs as respects any part of a highway which crosses the route of any of the new trunk roads that -
(a)where the highway is a highway maintainable at the public expense by a local highway authority, the part in question shall be maintained by that authority; and
(b)where the highway is not a highway so maintainable and is not maintainable under a special enactment or by reason of tenure, enclosure or prescription, the Secretary of State shall be under no duty to maintain the part in question, until, in either case, a date to be specified in a notice given by the Secretary of State to the highway authority for that highway. The date specified will not be later than the date on which the relevant route is opened for the purpose of through traffic.
4. In this Order:-
(1) All measurements of distance are measured along the route of the relevant highway;
(2) (i) "the deposited plan" means the plan numbered GLRT065/5012/36/TO1/1-1, marked "The A406 London North Circular Trunk Road (East London River Crossing (A13 to A2) Trunk Road and Slip Roads) Order 1988", signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at the Department of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3PY; and
(ii)"the new trunk roads" means the new trunk roads described in article 1 of this Order.
5. This Order shall come into force on 11th August 1988 and may be cited as the A406 London North Circular Trunk Road (East London River Crossing (A13 to A2) Trunk Road and Slip Roads) Order 1988.

The route of the main new trunk road is a route about 7.49 kilometres in length starting on the Rochester Way Relief Road at Falconwood in the London Borough of Greenwich, about 350 metres west of Rochester Way railway bridge then going in a north-easterly direction through Oxleas Wood keeping to the east of Shooters Hill and passing north of Poets Corner (in the London Borough of Bexley); in a north-easterly direction between the Woolwich cemeteries passing to the east of Bleak Hill and then going in a generally northerly direction between Plumstead and Abbey Wood. It then goes in a generally north-westerly direction through Thamesmead across the River Thames at Gallions Reach and then in a generally northerly direction through the Beckton Gas Works to a point about 239 metres north-west of the north bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Newham. This route is given the reference number 1 on the deposited plan.
The route of the Rochester Way Relief Road Interchange is in the form of a roundabout with a circumference of approximately 352 metres, and is situated at Falconwood at the junction of the main new trunk road and the Rochester Way Relief Road slip roads. This route is given the reference number 3 on the deposited plan.
The routes of these slip roads are the following:- Two routes to connect the westbound carriageway of the length of Rochester Way Relief Road to the Rochester Way Relief Road Interchange, and two routes to connect the eastbound carriageway of the Rochester Way Relief Road to the main new trunk road and the Rochester Way Relief Road Interchange. These routes are respectively given the reference numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7 on the deposited plan.
The routes of these slip roads are the following:- four routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the main new trunk road with the proposed new roundabout to be constructed at Shooters Hill. These routes are respectively given the reference numbers 8, 9, 10 and 11 on the deposited plan.
The routes of these slip roads are the following:- two routes to connect the northbound carriageway of the main new trunk road with Western Way and two routes to connect the southbound carriageway of the main new trunk road with Western Way and Eastern Way at Thamesmead. These routes are respectively given the reference numbers 12, 13, 14 and 15 on the deposited plan.
