The Secretary of State for Transport, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly in exercise of the powers conferred by section 65(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984(1), and of all other enabling powers, hereby give the following Directions:-
1. These Directions may be cited as the Traffic Signs General (Amendment) Directions 1987 and shall come into force on 15th October 1987.
2. The Traffic Signs General Directions 1981(2) shall be further amended in accordance with the following provisions of these Directions.
3. In the directions specified in column (1) of the Schedule to these Directions, for the words specified in column (2) there shall be substituted the words specified in column (3).
4. In direction 36, after paragraph (3) there shall be inserted the following new paragraph-
"(4) The front of any backing board for a sign mounted otherwise than as described in sub-paragraph (a) of paragraph (1) shall be coloured either grey or yellow."
5. In direction 41, after paragraph (3) there shall be inserted the following new paragraph-
"(4) When a traffic sign to which this paragraph applies is not in use, it shall display a plain grey or black face.".

These Directions amend the Traffic Signs General Directions 1981. The changes are-
(a)to direction 12, to provide for the use of the traffic sign for humped zebra crossings, introduced by the Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations 1986 (S.I. 1986/1859);
(b)to direction 14, to correct an error in an earlier instrument (S.I. 1982/1880);
(c)to directions 34(6), 35 and 36(1)(b), to provide for black as well as grey posts for traffic signs and signals, and for black as well as grey for the backs of signs;
(d)to direction 36, to allow the use of grey or yellow faced backing boards for traffic signs; and
(e)to direction 41, to require certain traffic signs not continuously in use to display a plain grey or black face when not in use.
