The Secretary of State for Transport, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 13(2) and (3) of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1967 and now vested in them(1), and of all other enabling powers, and after consultations with representative organisations in accordance with the provisions of section 107(2) of that Act, hereby make the following Regulations:-
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Motorways Traffic (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 1984 and shall come into operation on 17th October 1984.
2. In sub-paragraph (1)(b) of Regulation 3 of the Motorways Traffic (England and Wales) Regulations 1982(2) for the definition of "carriageway" there shall be substituted-
"carriageway" means
is provided for the regular passage of vehicular motor traffic along the motorway; and
where a hard shoulder is provided, has the approximate position of its left-hand or near-side edge marked with a traffic sign of the type shown in diagram 1012.1 in Schedule 2 to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981(3).

These Regulations amend the Motorways Traffic (England and Wales) Regulations 1982 so as to introduce a new definition of the word "carriageway".
