Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Her by sections 7(2)(b) and 10(7) of the Antarctic Treaty Act 1967, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:-
1. This Order may be cited as the Antarctic Treaty (Specially Protected Areas) Order 1977 and shall come into operation on 1st September 1977.
2. Specially Protected Area No. 6 (Cape Crozier, Ross Island) and Specially Protected Area No. 10 (Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands) shall cease to be designated as Specially Protected Areas for the purposes of the Antarctic Treaty Act 1967 and shall be omitted from the Schedule to the Antarctic Treaty (Specially Protected Areas) Order 1968(1).
3. The Antarctic Treaty (Specially Protected Area) Order 1969(2) (designation of Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetland Islands as Specially Protected Area No. 12) is hereby revoked.
4. For the purposes of the Antarctic Treaty Act 1967, the following area, being an area which has been recommended for inclusion in Annex B to Schedule 2 to the said Act, is designated as a Specially Protected Area:
SPECIALLY PROTECTED AREA NO. 17
LITCHFIELD ISLAND, ARTHUR HARBOUR,
PALMER ARCHIPELAGO
Lat. 64° 46&min;S., Long. 64° 06&min;W.
This area, the location of which is shown on the map in the Schedule hereto, is a small island, about 2.5 km2 in area.

This Order designates as a Specially Protected Area for the purposes of the Antarctic Treaty Act 1967 a further area in the Antarctic which has been recommended for inclusion in Annex B to the Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora (Schedule 2 to the Act) in pursuance of Article IX(1) of the Antarctic Treaty; and terminates the designation of three areas which are to be protected in future by administrative arrangements made pursuant to Recommendation VIII-4 of the Eighth Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (Cmnd. 6786).
