The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretary of State acting jointly in exercise of the powers conferred upon them by section 4 of, and Part II of Schedule 3 to, the European Communities Act 1972, and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following order:-
1.-(1) This order may be cited as the Sugar Act 1956 (Repeals) (Appointed Day) (No. 5) Order 1976, and shall come into operation on 1st December 1976.
(2) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply to the interpretation of this order as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
2. The repeal of the enactments mentioned in the Schedule to this order shall take effect, to the extent specified in column 3 of the Schedule, on 1st December 1976.

This order, made under section 4 of, and Part II of Schedule 3 to, the European Communities Act 1972, appoints a day for the repeal of specified provisions of the Sugar Act 1956 and the National Loans Act 1968 which are no longer required following adoption by the United Kingdom of the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Community. The principal provisions repealed are the Minister's power to advance sums to the Sugar Board except as regards advances made before the repeal takes effect, and his power, in specified circumstances, to direct the Board to withhold payments which would otherwise be payable under the 1956 Act to the British Sugar Corporation.
