The Secretary of State for the Environment, in relation to England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, in relation to Wales, hereby make this Order in exercise of their powers under section 6(1) of the Highways Act 1959, as set out in paragraph 4 of Schedule 21 to the Local Government Act 1972, and of all other enabling powers:-
1. This Order may be cited as the Boundary Bridges (Appointed Day) Order 1973 and shall come into operation on 1st January 1974.
2. The 1st January 1974 shall be the date before which councils of adjacent counties should agree between themselves which of them shall on and after 1st April 1974 be the highway authority for each highway carried by a bridge and the approaches thereto in a case where the bridge carries a highway for which the Secretary of State is not the highway authority and part of the bridge is situated in one county and part in another.

This Order fixes 1st January 1974 as the date before which councils of adjacent counties should agree between themselves which council shall on and after 1st April 1974 be the highway authority for those highways which are carried by boundary bridges and the approaches thereto.
