The Intermediate Areas and Derelict Land Clearance Areas Order 1972

The Secretary of State in exercise of his powers under section 1(1) and section 8(6) of the Local Employment Act 1972 hereby makes the following Order:-

1.-(1) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply to the interpretation of this Order as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

(2) This Order may be cited as the Intermediate Areas and Derelict Land Clearance Areas Order 1972 and shall come into operation immediately after being laid before Parliament.

2. The areas described in Part I of the Schedule to this Order are hereby specified as intermediate areas for the purposes of the Local Employment Act 1972.

3. The Derelict Land Clearance Areas Order 1970 shall have effect subject to the amendment that the Yorkshire and Humberside Derelict Land Clearance Area and the North West Derelict Land Clearance Area shall be deleted from the Schedule thereto.

4. The Intermediate Areas Order 1970 shall have effect subject to the amendment that in the Schedule thereto, for the description of the South East Wales Intermediate Area there shall be substituted the description of that Area in Part II of the Schedule to this Order.

The South East Wales Intermediate Area consisting of the employment exchange areas of:-

  • Abergavenny (excluding that part which lies outside the Abergavenny Municipal Borough and the Abergavenny Rural District)

  • Barry

  • Cardiff

  • Chepstow

  • Cwmbran

  • Llantwit Major

  • Monmouth

  • Newport

  • Newport Docks

  • Penarth

For the purposes of this Schedule the employment exchange areas referred to above are areas for which an employment exchange has been established or maintained for the purposes of the Employment and Training Act 1948 as those areas exist on the date on which this Order comes into operation.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order specifies the areas set out in Part I of the Schedule as intermediate areas for the purposes of the Local Employment Act 1972 in addition to those areas which were so specified by the Intermediate Areas Order 1970 (S.I. 1970/308) and by the Intermediate Areas Order 1971 (S.I. 1971/329). The Order also extends the South East Wales Intermediate Area to include the employment exchange areas of Chepstow and Monmouth.

The Order also amends the Derelict Land Clearance Areas Order 1970 (S.I. 1970/309) by deleting from the Schedule to that Order the areas which are now by virtue of this Order or the Intermediate Areas Order 1971 (S.I. 1971/329) intermediate areas but which were formerly derelict land clearance areas.
