The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Minister of Health, acting jointly, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by sections four and one hundred and twenty-three of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955, and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following regulations, after consultation with such organisations as appear to them to be representative of interests substantially affected by the regulations:-
1.-(1) These regulations may be cited as the Arsenic in Food (Amendment) Regulations, 1960; and shall come into operation on the 14th day of December, 1960.
(2) The Interpretation Act, 1889, shall apply to the interpretation of these regulations as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
2. The Arsenic in Food Regulations, 1959(1), shall be amended as follows:-
(a)by substituting in the first column of item 11 of the Schedule thereto for the words "Yeast and yeast products" the words "Yeast and yeast products, other than brewers' yeast intended for use by manufacturers in the manufacture of yeast products";
(b)by adding to the Schedule thereto the following item:-
"Description of food | Proportions of arsenic (expressed in terms of parts per million estimated by weight) |
---|---|
21. Brewers' yeast intended for use by manufacturers in the manufacture of yeast products | 5·0 (calculated on the dry matter)." |

These amending regulations increase from 2.0 to 5.0 parts per million the maximum amount of arsenic permitted in brewers' yeast intended for use by manufacturers in the manufacture of yeast products.
