The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 67(6) of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000[
1], hereby makes the following Order:
1.
This Order may be cited as the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 (Continuance of Office of Commissioner) Order 2003, and shall come into operation on 30th May 2003.
2.
The office of Commissioner, which is provided for by section 67 of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000, shall continue to exist for the period beginning with 31st May 2003 and ending on 31st May 2005.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order provides for the office of Police Oversight Commissioner, which is established by section 67 of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000, to continue to exist until 31st May 2005. Section 67(5) provides that, unless an order is made prolonging the existence of the office, it will cease to exist on 31st May 2003. The function of the Commissioner is to oversee the implementation of changes in the policing of Northern Ireland described in his terms of reference, including in particular changes resulting from the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000.
