EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (PROTECTION OF ANIMALS AT TIME OF SLAUGHTER) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 2004.

I, JOE WALSH, Minister for Agriculture and Food, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 ( No. 27 of 1972 ), for the purpose of giving further effect to Directive 93/119/EC of 22 December 19931 , hereby make the following Regulations--

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Protection of Animals at Time of Slaughter) (Amendment) Regulations, 2004.

2. The European Communities (Protection of Animals at Time of Slaughter) Regulations, 1995 ( S.I. No. 114 of 1995 ) are amended, in point II.9 of the First Schedule, by substituting “12” for “24”.

3. Section 12(1)(c) of the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1935 (No. 45 of 1935) shall be applied as though “twenty-four hours” has been substituted by “twelve hours”.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation.)

The purpose of these Regulations is to change from 24 hours to 12 hours the length of period after which animals kept in a slaughter-house are required to be provided with suitable food.
