S.I. No. 184/1958:

MERCANTILE MARINE ACT, 1955 (RECIPROCATING STATES) (UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA, NEW ZEALAND AND PAKISTAN) ORDER, 1958.

MERCANTILE MARINE ACT, 1955 (RECIPROCATING STATES) (UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA, NEW ZEALAND AND PAKISTAN) ORDER, 1958.

WHEREAS it is enacted by subsection (1) of section 19 of the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955 (No. 29 of 1955), that the Government may by order declare a particular state to be a reciprocating state if they are of opinion that it would be in the national interest so to do, and if they are satisfied that Irish citizens and Irish bodies corporate are entitled, under the laws of that state, to own a ship or a share in a ship having the nationality of that state :

AND WHEREAS the Government are of opinion that it would be in the national interest by order to make such declaration in respect of the Union of South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan and are satisfied that Irish citizens and Irish bodies corporate are entitled, under the laws of each of those states respectively, to own a ship or a share in a ship having the nationality of that state :

NOW, the Government, in exercise of the power conferred on them by subsection (1) of section 19 of the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955 (No. 29 of 1955), hereby order as follows :

1. This Order may be cited as the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955 (Reciprocating States) (Union of South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan) Order, 1958.

2. The Union of South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan are hereby declared to be reciprocating states for the purposes of the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955 (No. 29 of 1955).

GIVEN under the Official Seal of the Government, this 26th day of August, 1958.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order provides that citizens and bodies corporate of the Union of South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan are entitled to own Irish Ships.
