"Q. So that is why you were running, to get away from the police?

At the end of that period of questioning the judge obviously realised that he may have gone too far and said that he hoped he was not cross-examining. Mr Pownall, with customary courtesy, did not make the allegation at the time. Indeed it was too late for him to do so, although he did venture to say, "Well, you were hardly leading through his evidence but I have no objection."
