CONTRACTS OF EMPLOYMENT AND REDUNDANCY PAYMENTS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1965 - SECT 63

Reciprocal arrangements with Isle of Man.

63.(1) In this Act

"the appointed day" means such day as the Minister may appoint by order and,
without prejudice to section 17(5) of the Interpretation Act (Northern
Ireland) 1954, different days may be so appointed for different provisions or
different purposes of this Act;

"lock-out" means the closing of a place of employment, or the suspension of
work, or the refusal by an employer to continue to employ any number of
persons employed by him in consequence of a dispute, done with a view to
compelling those persons, or to aid another employer in compelling persons
employed by him, to accept terms or conditions of or affecting employment;

"the Minister" means the Minister of Health and Social Services;

"the Ministry" has the meaning assigned to it by section 4(12);

"renewal" includes extension, and any reference to renewing a contract or a
fixed term shall be construed accordingly;

"statutory provision" has the meaning assigned to it by section 1(f) of the
Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954;

"strike" means the cessation of work by a body of persons employed acting in
combination, or a concerted refusal or a refusal under a common understanding
of any number of persons employed to continue to work for an employer in
consequence of a dispute, done as a means of compelling their employer or any
person or body of persons employed, or to aid other employees in compelling
their employer or any person or body of persons employed, to accept or not to
accept terms or conditions of or affecting employment;

"transferred provision" has the meaning assigned to it by section 1(g) of the
Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954;

"tribunal" means a tribunal established under section 13 of the Industrial
Training Act (Northern Ireland) 1964;

"the United Kingdom Act" means the Redundancy Payments Act 1965.

(2) In this Act any reference to the Government of an overseas territory shall
be construed in accordance with section 50(6).

(3) In Parts I, II and III "employee" means an individual who has entered into
or works under (or, in the case of a contract which has been terminated,
worked under) a contract with an employer, whether the contract is for manual
labour, clerical work or otherwise, is express or implied, oral or in writing,
and whether it is a contract of service or of apprenticeship, and, ...
"employer", and any reference to employment, shall be construed accordingly.

(4) For the purposes of Parts II and III and this Part it is immaterial
whether the law which (apart from the said Parts) governs any person's
employment is the law of Northern Ireland or not.
