      EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995 ("the principal Regulations") which gave effect to Council Directive 93/119/EC on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing (O.J. No. L 340, 31.12.93, p.21). These Regulations substitute a new paragraph 7(2) of Schedule 7 to the principal Regulations, so as to permit a new gas mixture for killing birds at the slaughterhouse. They also make consequential amendments to paragraphs 8 and 10 of that Schedule.

No Regulatory Impact Assessment has been prepared in relation to these Regulations.

These Regulations extend to Scotland only.
