CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1968 - SECT 68

Restrictions on newspaper and broadcast reports of proceedings in juvenile courts and on appeal therefrom.

68.(1) Subject to subsection (2),

(a)no report in any newspaper or in any broadcast of any proceedings in a
juvenile court shall reveal the name, address or school, or include any
particulars likely to lead to the identification, of any child or young person
concerned in the proceedings, either as being the person against or in respect
of whom the proceedings are taken or as being a witness therein;

(b)no picture shall be published in any newspaper or in any television
broadcast as being or including a picture of any child or young person so
concerned in any such proceedings as aforesaid.

(2) Notwithstanding anything in subsection (1), the court or the Ministry may
in any case, if satisfied that it is in the interests of justice so to do, by
order dispense with the prohibitions of that subsection to such extent as may
be specified in the order.

(3) Any person who publishes any matter in contravention of this section shall
be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine
not exceeding one hundred pounds.

(4) The provisions of this section shall, with the necessary modifications,
apply in relation to any proceedings on appeal from a juvenile court
(including an appeal by case stated) as they apply in relation to proceedings
in a juvenile court.
